Wer durch Downtown Chicago geht, bekommt anhand der Straßennamen die Großen Seen beigebracht: nach der Ontario kommt die Erie und danach die Huron Street. Das Seen-Gebiet im Grenzgebiet zwischen U.S.A. und Kanada ist genauso hybrid wie die Musik von Great Lake Swimmers: mal hört man mehr Neil Young, mal Cowboy Junkies heraus. Dank Mastermind Tony Dekker hat die Band ihre eigene Americana-Folk-Version gefunden – mit schönem mehrstimmigen Gesang, eingängigen Melodien und gekonnten Arrangements. Bis 21. Mai ist mittouren möglich (18.5., Budapest, 20.5., Dresden), Abschluß ist in Berlin im Frannz Club. Zum Nachhören ist die aktuelle CD „Caught Light“ zu empfehlen:
Portland, Belgien
Und Portland? Das war im Jahr 2020 die Stadt mit der ärgsten Luftverschmutzung weltweit – Portland ist aber auch ein sympathisch-wirrer Wuschelkopf aus Belgien, der mit E-Gitarre und Piano seine Songs auf die HdM-Bühne brachte und mit seiner Ähnlichkeit zu Bob Dylan kokettierte – naja. Er wurde vom fachkundigen Publikum musikalisch jedenfalls zwischen Tim und Jeff Buckley eingeordnet. Ein schönes Kompliment an einem rundum gelungenen Abend. Die von Klaus Totzler sorgfältig kuratierte Reihe wird am 28. Mai 2026 fortgesetzt, dann steigen Charm Of Finches auf die Bühne des HdM, die klingen übrigens so:

Great Lake Swimmers & Portland at the House of Music in Vienna
The Canadian band Great Lake Swimmers delivered an intense concert evening at the House of Music on May 15, 2026. Portland provided brilliant support.
Walking through downtown Chicago, you'll learn about the Great Lakes from the street names: after Ontario comes Erie Street, and then Huron Street. The Lake District on the border between the USA and Canada is just as hybrid as the music of Great Lake Swimmers: sometimes you hear more Neil Young, sometimes Cowboy Junkies. Thanks to mastermind Tony Dekker, the band has found its own Americana-folk style – with beautiful multi-part harmonies, catchy melodies, and skillful arrangements. You can join them on tour until May 21 (May 18, Budapest; May 20, Dresden). The tour concludes in Berlin at the Frannz Club. Their latest CD, "Caught Light," is highly recommended.
Portland, Belgium
And Portland? Portland, the city with the worst air pollution in the world in 2020, is also home to a charmingly eccentric Belgian musician who brought his songs to the HdM stage with electric guitar and piano, playfully alluding to his resemblance to Bob Dylan – well, sort of. The knowledgeable audience, at least, placed him somewhere between Tim and Jeff Buckley in terms of musical style. A nice compliment on a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The series, carefully curated by Klaus Totzler, continues on May 28, 2026, when Charm Of Finches take to the HdM stage. (jm)
