Ein schönes Album zur Zeit hat Fuzzman mit „Willkommen im Nichts“ am Start: denn bei allen Anklängen in Richtung Schlager werden hier textlich nachdenkliche, kritische Zwischentöne geboten. Am letzten Album war ein Lied Fuzzmans Mutter gewidmet, dieses Mal wendet er sich mit „Komm wir drehn noch eine Runde“ den eigenen Kindern zu – ein Song mit Ohrwurm-Qualität. Das Eröffnungsstück "Nur Krieg für dich" befasst sich mit Narzissmus und als Statement rundet ein Cover von Napalm Deaths 1,3-Sekunden-Song "You Suffer" das Gesamtbild ab. Vielleicht beginnt so ein Alterswerk - mit Würde. All das sind nur Umschreibungen für: Album des Monats. Großartig!

Ein Werk, mit dem nicht zu rechnen war, das aber absolut Sinn macht: unsere alte Lieblingsband New Model Army – besteht seit mehr als 40 Jahren und das großartige Konzert im WUK bleibt unvergessen – hat sich für das Album „Sinfonia“ mit dem Sinfonia Leipzig Orchester zusammen getan. „Vagabonds“ und andere Songs entwickeln auch in der Orchester-Version die gewohnte Wucht. Rockband und Orchester ergänzen einander kongenial. Aber auch ruhige Momente gibt es, etwa „Winter“, bei dem das Orchester zunächst viel Raum bekommt, ehe zwischendurch die Band kraftvoll einsteigt:

Und weil „Angelina“ von Tony Furtado ein All-Time-Favourite-Song von uns ist, verweisen wir gerne auf das tolle Bluegrass-Album von Tony aus dem Jahr 2021, das den Titel „Decembering“ trägt und das umfangreiche Ouvre des Mannes aus Portland, Oregon: einfach alles anhören! Eine neue Single gibt es von The Gaslight Anthem, passend zur Jahreszeit heißt der Song „Autumn“. Der Vorbote zum sechsten Studioalbum „History Books“, das Ende Oktober erscheint:

Auf die aktuelle Single „Disgust for the poor“ folgt bald ein neues Alben von Christian Kjellvander – und auch eines von Monta (endlich!), über beide werden wir hier berichten.

Ab 13. Oktober 2023 ist Christopher Worth mit der schönen EP "Sliver" auf Europa-Tour, hauptsächlich in Deutschland (13.10. Osnabrück | Lagerhalle, 14.10. Saarbrücken | Terminus, 16.10. Dresden | Mora Bar, 17.10. München | Glockenbachwerkstatt, 18.10. Stuttgart | Galao, 20.10. Viechtach | Bahnhof, 22.10. Freiburg | Klimperstube, 25.10. Zürich | HelloStudio, 26.10. St.Gallen | Hug's Kurzeck), aber auch in Graz (29.10.) und Klagenfurt (28.10.) ist er Ende Oktober live zu sehen. Dieser Song wird sicher auch zu hören sein:

Ein seit längerem angedachtes Projekt wird mit dieser Veröffentlichung realisiert: Iris T. hat gemeinsam mit dem Multi-Instrumentalisten Hans Zinkl und weiteren Mitmusikern Franz Schuberts „Winterreise“ in ein jazziges Gewand gegossen; dabei gibt es auch mal einen Ausflug in Richtung Reggae. Die Live-Umsetzung kann man am 19. November 2023 um 14h im Porgy genießen – exakt 195 Jahre davor (am 19.11.1828) ist Schubert in Wien verstorben.

Von 4. bis 19. November 2023 findet in Wien das Klezmore Festival statt, die erste Ausgabe dieses Festivals gab es im Jahr 2004. Seitdem ging es beim Klezmore Festival stets um den Spagat zwischen Traditionspflege und Innovation. Wie bei anderen Festivals von Friedl Preisl gibt es auch in diesem Rahmen eine Stummfilm-Schiene mit Live-Musik, am 12. November ist etwa „Die Stadt ohne Juden“ im Filmhaus Kino Spittelberg zu sehen, es spielen Stefan Foidl (Piano) und Viola Falb (Saxophon). Ethel Merhaut, Amsterdam Klezmer Band und Styrian Klezmore Orchestra sind u.a. im Rahmen des heurigen Festivals zu sehen. Hingehen!

Yana: "Journey Of The Soul"

Yana, a singer-songwriter of Brno, Czech Republic, a relative newcomer on the international indie/folk scene, has just recently completed 'Journey Of The Soul', an album project that has to be described as a remarkable achievement, involving a impressive cast of musical collaborators and recording sessions across a number of countries. It's an album of substance, special moods, and intervowen themes and motifs. One that ought to be listened to attentively, in the assigned order of song appearance: The opener 'Reach Out' is delicately arranged, with subtle lead guitar notes, percussion and background vocals all contributing to an atmospheric track, about how, if the inner life turns dark, one shouldn't keep troubles pent up inside. 'Men Of The Sea' beautifully combines accordion and two different whistles, with a kind of medieval sound, underscoring the topic of the lyric about undertaking a pilgriming sea voyage towards Santiago de Compostela, and the dangers it entails.* 'Calm Before The Storm' seems like a perfect follow-up to the preceding track, continuing the sea imagery, but now moving it towards expressing the emotions connected with clinging on to life for a little longer, when knowing the end is nearing. Sparsely arranged, but the medieval feel is retained with the instrumentation here (bodhrán and violin). Another facet of Yana's sea imagery comes to expression in 'My Anchor', a song about the tenderness and meaningfulness of a loving friendship where attraction is also a dimension. Again differently blended, this time adding harp and mandolin to the guitars. Next, 'Time' is a short, sparsely arranged musical rumination on the fragility of the temporal.
At this point it seems like the record has been leading gently towards what comes next, subtly introducing and repeating certain themes and motifs that now all converge in the powerful 'The Traveller', a homage to the life and legacy of late Fergus O'Farrell of Interference, creator of the song 'Gold', made famous on the Glen Hansard/Marketa Irglova film 'Once'. On this song, Yana takes a step back, and only lends her voice to harmony singing. Maurice Culligan, original keyboard player of Interference, fittingly, is tasked as the main instrumental and vocal performer of this beautifully written song that feels like the album centrepiece.
From here on, melancholy vibes persist, yet always with substance and afterthought, in 'Funeral Of Life', and the bilingual Greek chorus-like 'Dark Waters/Aguas Oscuras', but ends on a optimistic note with 'Pick Up The Pieces', a duet and lyric collaboration between Yana and Maurice Culligan about perseverence, which perfectly balances the sombre moods thus far with a bright and forward-looking defiance!
Yana has a way of often subtly evoking something else, something spiritual, something moving on a metaphorical plane. And this is where these songs get woven together thematically. There's voyaging, searching, and strife there, and a quest to overcome, not to succumb to the perils of the natural forces we all encounter on our journeys through life. Instrumental arrangements are interesting, tasteful, never dull. They make each song different, yet without losing continuity across the album. Often sparse, but therein again proving the old adage, 'less is more'! Yana's voice is distinct and expressive. She has her own way of phrasing, ranging from the sung, to the spoken, to the whispered. It often feels very intimate and it it conveys something special on an emotive level. Lend the album 'Journey Of The Soul' an ear, and you'll encounter mystical and spiritual vibrations, often of an Irish colouring. A colouring imbued with the creative and motivating spirit of Yana's late friend Fergus O'Farrell, whose passing moved Yana to embark on her musical journey and this album project. *This voyage was recreated some years ago with a traditionally built Irish boat carrying different groups of people at intermittent stages, but with a tragic outcome, when one of the sailors perished in a storm. A part of this journey featuring a group of folk musicians, including Glen Hansard, was made into a documentary titled 'The Camino Voyage'.
